Educational Preparation for Ordination

The standard preparation for ordination to the priesthood in the Individual Formation track is a three-year program (90 hours) which leads to a Master of Divinity degree (M.Div.) at an accredited Episcopal seminary.   You will need a bachelor's degree in order to obtain an M.Div.

The bishop primarily recommends the following seminaries:

The Church Divinity School of the Pacific (CDSP), 2451 Ridge Road. Berkeley, CA 94709 (near San Francisco)  On-line courses are available also.

Episcopal Divinity School, 99 Brattle, Cambridge, MA 02138 (near Boston)

Episcopal Theological Seminary of the Southwest, Box 2247, Austin, TX  On-line courses are available.

General Theological Seminary, 175 Ninth Ave., New York, NY 10011 (on Manhattan)

School of Theology, University of the South, Sewanee, TN 37383 (50 miles nw of Chattanooga)

Virginia Theological Seminary, 3737 Seminary Road, Alexandria, VA 22304 (near Washington, D.C.)

Seabury-Western is restructuring and is no longer accepting M.Div. students in the three-year residential program.  They are heading in a different direction with theological education.  Check their website for updates.

A graduate degree in theology is available at Creighton University.  You may be required to take additional courses at an Episcopal seminary in order to fulfill the requirements to be ordained a priest.

Courses are offered in Latin, Greek and Hebrew and Religious Studies at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln.

In local preparation for the priesthood and the diaconate, there are several options.

The Nebraska School for Baptismal Ministry and Formation offers courses twice a year.  The diaconal preparation program takes about three years of classes.  For more information contact the chairman of the Nebraska School Committee, the Venerable James Visger, Archdeacon for Nebraska.

Education for Ministry (EFM) is a four-year program designed for lay persons.  Successful completion of the program has been used as an equivalency for some of the requirements of the Nebraska School.

Providence Theological School offers all of its courses on-line.  Be sure to read the PTS Accreditation and Membership page.
